Stat Joust: Penn State, Purdue and Indiana (10-14-14)

Jousting
Below is our “Stat Joust” comparing team and individual rankings for Penn State and its upcoming opponents: Purdue and Indiana.  A few things jump out: Penn State and Purdue are, statistically, very good teams.  Of course, Purdue has had a fairly soft schedule to date, but still, they clearly have some talent. Will they end the season at the top of the B1G? Who knows — but we wouldn’t bet against them on Friday night versus Penn State (of course, we wouldn’t bet for them, either, as we don’t bet.)

Another thing that jumps out is how close Indiana and Penn State are in team blocking and team service aces (OK, not so close on team service aces, but Indiana ranks second in the B1G.)

We’re looking forward to an exciting match on Friday night, and a tough one on Saturday as well.  Never forget Penn State’s “Lost Weekend” in 2010, when the Nittany Lions lost to both Purdue (25-21, 25-18, 16-25, 18-25, 11-15 — the first time Purdue had defeated Penn State since 1987) and Indiana (19-25, 25-27, 25-18, 24-26 — another streak-breaker, as the Hoosiers, after 40 consecutive losses to Penn State, won for the first ever in a series that started in 1982.)

DigNittany’s North Pole Poll: It’s Cold at the Top

Here’s are DigNittany North Pole — we’re late again (in the words of our friend tjb “heads will roll!”).  It’s interesting to us that Russ Rose’s early-season ranking of Penn State — typically at 6th — appears to be right where they’re settling in.

Lionsfan Looks at Week 7 (and DigNittany’s North Pole Poll)

By Lionsfan Home Sweet Home? A tough road trip—and a talented Nebraska team—caught up with the Nittany Lions on Friday night. Despite steamrolling the Huskers 25-12 in the first set, Penn State couldn’t keep control of the match—and Nebraska’s improved play—dropping the next three sets 22-25, 20-25, 23-25. The loss dropped the Lions two spots…Continue Reading

Lionsfan’s Look at Week 5 (and DigNittany’s North Pole Poll)

Lionsfan Looks at Week 5 Red Rivalry Renewed             Although the 43-7 Nittany Lion series advantage against Wisconsin may seem lopsided, this has frequently been a hotly contested rivalry—and all signs point  to a continuation of its most competitive years when the two teams meet tonight in Madison for their only conference…Continue Reading

Lionsfan Looks at Week 3 (Plus – DigNittany’s North Pole Poll — It’s Cold at the Top)

Lionsfan Looks Ahead Despite a valiant effort, Penn State dropped a five-set heartbreaker at Stanford last weekend to lose its hold on the top spot—despite out-hitting and out-scoring the Cardinal. The team’s performance gave the Lion faithful the confidence that, despite the loss of three All Americans, this team can still be competitive with the…Continue Reading

Lionsfan on Week 1 (Plus – What Do the AVCA Pre-Season Polls Tell Us About Who Will Win the NCAA Championship?)

The AVCA Pre-season Polls: A Look Back By Lionsfan, August 27, 2014 As the 2014 NCAA women’s volleyball season gets underway this week, it’s the perfect time to look back at past AVCA Pre-season Polls to see if we can spot any trends, or derive any insight.  OK, insight may be a tall order, but it’s…Continue Reading

Thrillers! (lionsfan on Week 7: Five B1G Hair-Raisers; Trojans Tops (Again); Carolina Dreamin'; Big-12 Sleepers

lionsfan loved the five hair-raising matches in the B1G 5-for-5 Thrillers! We admit we’re a little extra proud and partial to the B1G, and Saturday night showed why: five of the conference’s six matches went the distance, with underdogs pushing the favorites in some nail-biting action. lionsfan was perched in front of mission control (i.e., his…Continue Reading
