Kaitlyn Hord Leads Penn State Past Oregon

Freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn Hord set a new career high with 16 kills in No. 5 Penn State women’s volleyball’s sweep of No. 18 Oregon Saturday in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge at Maples Pavilion.

Hord obliterated her previous kills mark of seven, while adding seven blocks and two digs. Nia Reed and Taylor Leath recorded nine and seven kills, respectively, in the 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-19) win over the Ducks.

Oregon upset No. 1 Minnesota 3-1 Friday before looking like a different team against the Nittany Lions the following day. Willow Johnson was one of the lone bright spots offensively for the Ducks, finishing with a team-high 11 kills.

Serena Gray turned in a balanced performance with six kills and six blocks in the victory. Jonni Parker finished with just four kills, but the Casstown, Ohio, native had seven digs, three blocks, and a service ace.

Redshirt senior setter Bryanna Weiskircher posted a season-high 37 assists, nine digs, four blocks, and a kill. On the defensive end, junior libero Kendall White continued her strong play of late with a match-high 18 digs.

Freshmen Gabby Blossom, Amanda Phegley, Brooklynn Hill, and Allyson Cathey saw action off the bench for Russ Rose’s Nittany Lions. Blossom’s five digs provided the highlight of the group. Penn State (6-1) travels to Washington, D.C., Friday for a 7 p.m. match against Howard.
